Orkut Digger

User manual

Orkut Digger is an add-on for downloading the available data from a community you want to study.

1. Install it

Download the package for your browser. In Chrome, open chrome://extensions, enable Developer mode, and choose “Load unpacked” after extracting the ZIP. In Firefox Developer Edition or Nightly, open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox and load the XPI temporarily. Regular Firefox requires the signed version published on Mozilla Add-ons.

2. Open a preserved community

Visit an archived Orkut community on web.archive.org. Digger starts only on compatible archived pages.

3. Start collecting

Click the Digger icon and choose “Collect this community”. A new tab shows progress. Keep it open: the add-on visits available forum, topic, pagination, and reply pages at one page per second.

4. Download CSV

When collection finishes, click “Download CSV”. The file has one row per topic; replies are structured in the same cell, with author and date when preserved.

Important limits

The extension cannot recover pages that were never captured or are unavailable. It records those failures, sends no content to another server, and stops after 10,000 pages to prevent loops and excessive load on the Internet Archive.
